Bauer Butters Rigg is a seven-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer, a breed known equally for their hunting and family bonding talents. To say Bauer excels at both is an understatement. He is at once a hunting machine and cuddler extraordinaire. He imprinted on me instantly and has been my confidante, keeper of secret fears and sidekick.

Our start was as rough as any other puppyhood; unpredictability riddled with a few wrecked household items and treasured heirlooms. But whatever, you can’t put a price on puppy love. He lit my life like a fireball in February 2017. The first glance I had of him was of his back panel sporting a brown patch and docked tail flashing by my kitchen window. My husband had him off leash after a long car ride, rescued from another couple who had an unexpected medical issue and realized they were not in a position to do him justice.

While we were prepared and everything is cool now, our Mr. Bau Bau was an absolute cluster when he came to us. He loved playing us, (still does but we love that he keeps a part of his puppyhood) by taking anybody’s shoes and or socks as he or she was about to put them on and camp out under the coffee table with his prize. This went on every morning for the first few weeks without fail. We came to expect it but alas his brown patched puppy tush was way quicker than any of us. Like a lion he’d lie in wait, then come at ya like a fireball and steal a piece of footwear.

We keep our footwear up on stools and sometimes in a big blanket box, but Bau Bau still beats us to it now and again! We can’t complain, after all he lets us dress him up in lights and other fun stuff for a quick pic or a laugh. And I do mean quick, his pose in the pic here lasted all of 13 seconds. He also puts food on the table whether a pheasant, grouse from afield or a tomato or bunch of basil from the garden he’s not allowed in (he’s Houdini in canine form and likes to uproot herbs especially!).

We love our Bauer Butters. He’s both lit and legit! He’s also Mr. December on a calendar - 2025 Paw Print Dog Calendar – The Paw Print - and takes calls any day after 12:00 p.m. EST.
